Death of a loved one She and I stare intently at each other; her head starts shaking softly in the moments before she can let the drowned words escape from her throat. "I'm… so sorry…" Streams run down my cheeks before she can finish, and after a moment I have to widen my eyes to see her. I lift my hand to run my fingers down her cheeks, and as I touch her I can feel warmth penetrating my nerve endings, snaking up my arm until it makes my heart flutter. It feels like the first time I touched her, and the affectation of this moment now turns the sensation to one of freezing water being injected in my veins.

Our terrified fingers dance gracelessly over eDeath of a loved one

Rip Tide Your fingers flitch off soggy skin
To bury idle hands within
The carrion that lies below
To free it from the undertow

The salty water, red and black,
Will keep what's left from turning back
The sand has pulled you out to sea
Where death fulfills its guarantee

The sun will set, the tide will rise
And there will be no compromise
No word or thought can drag you free
Your body's tied to your debris

The sky is open, bright, and clear
So don't be wasting time with fear
You have this moment, nothing more
And nothing on the ocean floor

Your head submerges, then returns
Consider that a lesson learned
For those who seek another fate
