Who Wants To Help Me Start a Poetry Club?

Mon Feb 28, 2005, 7:28 PM
I don't know about the rest of you, but I get fed up with all this bullshit in the poetry world, and especially in the Deviant Art world. People who copy and paste comments with nothing more potent to say than 'GR8 WORK stop by my gallery and check out my latest stuff', or even worse, people who generate unspecific messages with the guise of being deep and merely using it as a vehicle to gain page views. Specifically I dislike any poet who tries to put their stuff out there only so they can get comments, people who don't give a shit about the art form. I'm also not a fan of certain types of poetry, but I won't go into a tirade about that because I realize it's my opinion, but the kind of people who think poetry is only an outlet for depression/suicidal tendencies (not people who necessarily write things like that, I have in the past, just people who produce nothing but that) and fail to realize it's making more people disinterested about the art form.

And have you ever noticed how Deviant Art has little to no appreciation for poets? We can hardly do typographical poetry, we only have one format to submit our work, the categories for poetry are sparse and hardly comprehensive or specific. Have you also noticed that the 'daily deviations' are not only ALWAYS related to pictures or paintings, but usually have some kind of sexual subtext and usually nothing important to say. It's a major shame. I'll bet at the Deviant Art summit there's one 100 foot square corner for poets and they aren't allowed contact with anyone else.

Anyway, back to my point, as suggested in my heading. I'd like help constructing a new poetry club. The Living Poet Society, of which I am a member, is good, but it's having difficulty getting going again. Besides, they let in every person who applies, and many of which, I'm sure, only enter so more people will look at their work. My idea would be to construct a community of which a few core people are in charge to make decisions, perhaps five or so. When other people express an interest in joining, there will have to be a unanimous vote amongst those in charge for the person to be included. We'd be looking for people who have a creativity to match their determination and enthusiasm for their work as well as others.

The society heads will watch over the members it includes and perhaps every month or so select a feature deviation that will be linked from the site, a deviation of poetry or even prose that best represents the spirit and style of the format. We could vote in new members to the administration if we get an inkling that they truly want to contribute. We can feature deviants in particular who we find to be inspiring or bold. Perhaps the idea will fail, and no one will ever even visit the site, but is it worth it to try bringing some fantastic poets together in order to create a club that will show the public the best the poetic world has to offer? I think so. But I can't do it alone, shit, maybe if I get people together they won't think I even belong in part of the club, let alone one of those in charge. I have a few ideas of those I think that can help me with this, people whose work and personalities I truly admire: Newo, The Morose Cherub, Cagey Butterfly, Infernosilver, Venturus, and All Singing Crap. Please, tell me what you think.

I didn't have that specifically in mind... however, if we got enough clout as an organization, perhaps we could attempt to overthrow Deviant Art leadership.

I completely agree with you about Deviant Art's lack of attention/appreciation for poets and poetry. I'm often annoyed by the lack of sufficient categories and formats we have to submit written work in, as well. It would definitely be great to have a serious poetry club around here and I'd be glad to contribute in any way I can. I'll warn you now though, I'm quite unreliable when it comes to deadlines and dates and in the past I've never been very outgoing when it comes to commenting and all - usually I just read and reflect, often finding myself without anything valuable to reply with. But I can certainly try and be more responsive if you'd like me to be a member of your club. Either way, let me know if there's anything I can do to help out. Take care

"total fucking doom"

support the offensive, profane, indecent, obscene, blasphemous, vulgar, subversive, lurid, hostile, disgusting, tasteless, vile & controversial arts.
Glad to know you're interested. I'd like to have good variety amongst the administration, and no one I know writes poetry like you, which is a very, very good thing.

Hey Hey, I'm probs not good enough to be actually in it but I'd certainly love for it to exist so i could pop by and read something that might actually be half decent...I often browse through the poetry on DA and without sounding totally cold hearted...most of it doesn't really inspire me or make me want to finish reading it. I agree about DA not being too big on poems, I guess alot of people are more visual and want to see a picture where it's easier to see if the talents there...it's a shame because poetry can be so inspiring and capture a mood, a place, anything you want if done right. I hate to see all these "poets" being complemented on their depth for writing about their so called torture....okay again with the cold hearted but meh it's one of those things. It takes away the meaning of any poem in that kind of category and some people are genuine so it really is a pity. Anyway that's my rant....Go for the club thing I think it's a great idea and in the end whats the worst that can happen? It won't suceed, but at least then you can say you had a go and anyway I think it would be popular as I know a few people who share your sentiments. Good Luck!

Well, with your sentiments I'd say you'd already be halfway in the organization I plan on getting off the ground. Clearly you are not entirely interested in your own work and are looking for something more in other places on Deviant Art, and that would be part of our philosophy. Luckily for me, the former head of the Living Poet Society has expressed an interest in this organization and may in fact help me get it up and running. Well, I'm not given to many journal entries, so keep your eyes peeled for updates. Thank you for being interested! :D
